Special Investigation Intro

I have decided to do my special investigation project on guitar technology and all of the hardware and technical aspects that make up an electric guitar. This is because, as a guitarist, I feel I need to have a better general and all round knowledge of my instrument. Therefore my target for this assignment, is to have a much greater in depth knowledge about the makeup of the electric guitar and know what all of the parts do and how they work together to make the guitar work as a whole instrument.

In my project I will research all of the different parts of an electric guitar, the different varieties of these parts and examples of these on famous guitar models. I will compare different manufacturers and alternatives to certain parts. I will also try and reach a conclusion of which parts are superior, and what works well together, as well as what works well for different styles and different kinds of players.

I feel that this will be useful to me in the future when it comes to buying new guitars as well as modifying or repairing guitars, I will research:

Woods: The different woods commonly used to make electric guitars, the different qualities of the wood and how they affect the sound. I will also look at the advantages and disadvantages of different types of wood and why different players might prefer a certain type of wood as well as different guitars the woods are commonly found on.

Necks: I will research the different materials used on a guitar neck including the fretboard and how they affect the sound. I will also look at the different joining methods of necks and the various scale lengths and neck sizes and how they affect playability and tone as well as the guitars they are commonly found on.

Electronics: I want to understand more about the electronic circuit that is built into every electric guitar and how it works as well as the components used. I will research different types of pickups and famous examples of pickups and how they work as well as how they are made. I will also look into how these different pickups affect the tone of a guitar and why a player might prefer them. As well as this I will examine the other components in an electric guitar circuit including the pickup selector and controls. Bridges: I will look at the various types of bridges that are commonly used on electric guitars and examine the differences between them and how the bridges have an impact on tone and playability. I will look at famous bridge designs and their popular use on famous guitars and why a player might prefer a certain type of bridge.
